How smartphones affect memory

Nowadays, smartphones and other smart devices are not just distracting, but make you forget some information. Indeed, why train your memory if everything is stored in your smartphone: card numbers, logins, passwords, phone numbers. Instead of thinking about a question, we google it, expecting a clear answer. We no longer remember important dates - for this there is a calendar in the smartphone and reminders. Experts even warn that smartphone addiction leads to mental laziness.
A recent study showed that smartphones affect the productivity of teenagers. Swiss and Belgian scientists studied the habits of 700 teenagers aged 12 to 17 years old during the year: study participants filled out questionnaires, answering questions about their habits in using a smartphone, and also reported on their mental and physical condition. It turned out that the radiation from smartphones negatively affects the perception of information, this is to blame for the direct impact while talking on the phone. The memory is affected by the radio wave when the smartphone is located exactly at the right ear (the areas of the brain responsible for figurative memory are mainly located in the right hemisphere)

The impact of a smartphone on sleep

Using a smartphone before going to bed affects its duration and quality. Eye cells contain a specific light-sensitive protein that captures the light of certain waves. They send signals to the brain that regulate the circadian rhythms of the body. The peak of blue light falls in the morning, reminding the body that it's time to wake up for the whole day. The red light increases in the evening, signaling that it's time to go to bed soon. Interrupting this cycle with blue light from the devices, normal sleep and wake cycles are disrupted.

How we violate digital etiquette

Sitting on a smartphone during a meeting or close communication is not only indecent, but also harmful. The most interesting thing is that most people understand this perfectly, but still violate etiquette. Gadgets interfere with close contact and social connections. Scientists from England conducted an experiment in which strangers met and communicated with each other, talking about their lives over the past month. Some had a notebook on the table, while others had a smartphone. It turned out that those who had a smartphone, listened to their interlocutors worse, believing that new acquaintances are not trustworthy, and friendship with them does not make sense. This is what happens in everyday life.

Are push notifications harmful

Each notification interrupts work when the phone is nearby. You just tune in to a working mood, then you get distracted by a push notification, and then you try to force yourself to work again. This is very time consuming. Even the silent mode does not help not to be distracted from an important lesson. we ourselves noticed that it’s very good when the smartphone is in another room or turned off - it becomes easier to work, and you don’t pay attention to it at all. The same, as it turned out, is also confirmed by scientists from the University of Texas: they noticed that students who left their smartphones outside the classroom did better on tests than those who had their smartphone turned off in their backpack. These guys solved tasks worse and got tired faster.

To be honest, I would like to live without a smartphone for at least a week, then to talk about what changes have taken place. Also, it’s not always possible to even just sleep without a smartphone – a miracle of technology is always there, even when you wake up in the middle of the night, about to check the latest news or instant messengers. In fact, the smartphone should not be blamed for all the troubles, rather, one's own inability to plan time.
